For decades, Cairo has served as a place of refuge and opportunity for Yemenis seeking stability beyond the hardships of home. Since the escalation of the current conflict in Yemen in 2015, Egypt’s capital has become one of the largest centers of the Yemeni diaspora, with an estimated 500,000 to 700,000 Yemenis now living in the city. Families, students, entrepreneurs, and patients have come to Cairo searching for safety, education, medical treatment, and the chance to rebuild their lives amid the ongoing crisis at home. Yet, historical ties between Yemen and Egypt long predate the current conflict. For generations, Yemenis traveled to Cairo for education, business, or medical care. However, the war transformed what was once temporary migration into long-term displacement and uncertainty for many families.
Today, Yemeni communities can be found across Cairo, particularly in areas such as Ard al-Liwa, Faisal, and Dokki. Restaurants, cafés, and small businesses run by Yemenis have helped preserve cultural traditions while creating spaces of connection and belonging. Community networks also play an important role in helping newcomers find housing, schools, healthcare, and other essential services. For many Yemeni families, education remains a priority. Parents continue to invest in their children’s futures despite financial strain and instability. Cairo offers access to schools and universities that many young Yemenis view as pathways toward opportunity. Yet rising living costs, tuition fees, and residency expenses place enormous pressure on families already coping with displacement and trauma. At the same time, many Yemenis travel to Cairo seeking medical treatment as Yemen’s healthcare system has been severely damaged by years of conflict. Hospitals in Yemen often lack specialized care, equipment, and medication, forcing patients with chronic illnesses or serious medical conditions to seek treatment abroad.
However, arriving in Cairo does not end their struggles. Many Yemeni patients and their families face major financial and emotional challenges while trying to cover treatment costs, accommodation, transportation, and daily living expenses. Away from home and often without strong support networks, many are unable to meet even their most basic needs during their stay in Egypt. Masarat Foundation aims to support the Yemeni community in Cairo, both those who have settled there long-term and those who are in the city temporarily for medical treatment, education, or other urgent needs. Through humanitarian and educational initiatives, the foundation seeks to help vulnerable
Yemenis access support, preserve dignity, and build a better future. As the Yemeni community in Cairo continues to navigate displacement, economic insecurity, and other difficulties, the need for meaningful humanitarian and educational support remains urgent. Behind every student, patient, and family is a story of resilience, but also of unmet needs and tremendous sacrifices. Supporting Yemenis in Cairo is not only about providing immediate assistance — it is about preserving dignity, strengthening communities, and investing in the future of people who continue to endure the consequences of conflict far from home.
