Literacy Program in Seiyun, Yemen
Masarat Foundation operates a literacy program in the displacement camp of Mariamah located in Seiyun, in southern Yemen, providing educational opportunities to women whose lives have been profoundly impacted by years of conflict. The camp is home to approximately 300 internally displaced families who have fled violence from different regions of the country in search of safety. While displacement has disrupted the lives of everyone in the camp, women have been disproportionately affected, as many were forced to leave school at an early age or never had the opportunity to receive a formal education due to war, poverty, or long-standing social barriers.
Our program offers these women a chance to develop essential reading, writing, and basic numeracy skills in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. Beyond improving literacy, the classes help participants build self-confidence, gain greater independence in their daily lives, and strengthen their ability to support their children’s education and engage more actively in their communities.
Although the program was initially created to serve internally displaced women, it has also become an important educational resource for women from the surrounding host community, including members of the marginalized Muhamasheen, who continue to face significant barriers to education and economic opportunity. By bringing together women from different backgrounds in a shared learning space, the program fosters social cohesion, mutual support, and a sense of solidarity among participants. Through this initiative, Masarat Foundation seeks not only to reduce illiteracy but also to empower women with the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to build more resilient families and contribute to the long-term recovery and development of their communities.
